Equality Agents Training Course

A rule or policy may seem neutral, but depending on a person’s combination of characteristics – gender, age, background, economic status, or disability – its effects can be very different.
What works for one group may exclude another if we fail to consider the complexity of experiences.

Intersectional thinking increases the accuracy of analysis and allows us to anticipate who may be unconsciously excluded.

The benefits of intersectional thinking at work

  • better design of policies and procedures – so that they are fair to everyone
  • understanding complex barriers and opportunities – instead of simplistic assumptions
  • creating an inclusive environment – everyone has a real opportunity to participate and develop
  • precise communication – avoiding unconscious prejudices and stereotypes

Intersectionality teaches us to look at things in context, not through the lens of a single characteristic. This is key to more equitable and effective teamwork.
