Equality Agents Training Course

The aim of this lesson is to develop the ability to recognize subtle forms of exclusion, group pressure and informal mechanisms of influence in the workplace.

What should you pay attention to while watching?

  • What behaviors are overt and what are hidden?
  • Who has real influence on the situation – formally and informally?
  • Is there pressure to conform?
  • How do others react – do they support, ignore or reinforce the situation?

Key observations

In the work environment, many mechanisms of exclusion operate in subtle and difficult to grasp ways.
It is not individual events, but repetitive patterns of behavior that build the actual organizational climate.

  • lack of response may reinforce undesirable behaviors
  • group norms influence what is accepted
  • people who deviate from the norm may be marginalized

Deeper reflection

Not every form of exclusion is obvious. It often takes the form of:

  • omissions in communication
  • ignoring ideas
  • subtle comments or jokes

Such actions, although individually they may seem insignificant, in the long run have a real impact on employee well-being and team effectiveness.

Application

Being aware of group dynamics and your own reactions is crucial to building an inclusive work environment.
Every team member influences the organizational culture – through action or inaction.
