Step 3. How to talk about inequality without blaming
Estimated time: 1.5 hours
- This point is key for the final PowerPoint.
- If the message sounds accusatory, many companies will disengage. If the message is too soft, it will lose impact.
- The balance lies in:
- clearly naming the problem;
- avoiding an attacking tone;
- speaking about practices, processes, and culture, not only about “bad individuals”;
- showing that many inequalities also occur without explicit intention;
- proposing a perspective oriented towards improvement.
This connects with Module 1, where you have already worked on the idea that organisations can produce inequality even without declaring it, and that many apparently neutral practices generate unequal effects.
Team task
Transform these sentences:
“This company discriminates.”
“Managers do not care.”
“The organisation excludes people.”
into more useful and professional versions.
Example
Instead of:
“This company discriminates.”
You can say:
“Some organisational practices may be producing unequal outcomes, even if this is not fully visible yet.”
