Inequalities are interconnected
People do not have just one characteristic that defines their experiences.
Gender, age, ethnicity, disability and economic status can interact,
creating unique patterns of opportunities and barriers.
Inequalities do not operate in isolation – they reinforce or weaken each other.
What is intersectionality?
Intersectionality is an analytical tool that allows us to:
- understand how different factors combine in an individual’s life
- explain why certain groups experience specific barriers
- better design inclusive policies and practices
It is not the sum of individual features.
Thinking in terms of “adding” gender + age + status is a mistake – intersectionality shows interactions and context.
Why is it worth remembering this at work?
- Better personnel decisions – because we see people’s real needs.
- Justice and equality – because we take into account the diversity of experiences.
- An inclusive environment – because we avoid simplistic assumptions.
Intersectionality teaches us to listen, observe, and respond to what truly shapes people’s lives.
Being aware of the connections between different inequalities is a step towards true equality.
