Equality Agents Training Course

Workgroups don’t operate solely within formal organizational structures. In practice, they develop their own norms that influence the behavior, decisions, and relationships among employees.

What does each group create?

  • Implicit rules: unwritten rules about what is acceptable and what is not (e.g., communication style, how ideas are submitted).
  • Shared expectations: beliefs about how one “should” work, react, and collaborate.
  • Informal hierarchies: people who – despite not having a formal management role – influence decisions and the atmosphere in the team.

Informal power

Not all authority is formal. In many teams, real influence is wielded by individuals:

  • with extensive experience or seniority
  • well-connected socially (networks)
  • perceived as “authorities” by other team members

Informal power can support cooperation, but it can also perpetuate exclusion and inequality.

Risks related to group dynamics

  • favoring selected people in access to information and projects
  • ignoring the voices of less visible people
  • perpetuating stereotypes and prejudices through everyday practices

Practical conclusion

Conscious team management requires understanding not only the formal structure, but also the hidden mechanisms of influence.
Leaders should observe group dynamics, reinforce inclusive behaviors, and respond to subtle forms of exclusion.

Real organizational culture is revealed not in regulations, but in everyday interactions.
