What are prejudices?

Biases are automatic mental shortcuts that our brains use to process information and make decisions faster.

They help you react quickly, but they can distort judgment and lead to unfair decisions.

And stereotypes?

A stereotype is a generalized and simplified idea about an entire group of people.
Stereotypes perpetuate social expectations and can influence everyday decisions at work.

Examples of stereotypes in the workplace:

  • “Women are less likely to be leaders.”
  • “Young people are irresponsible.”
  • “Foreigners speak Italian poorly.”

How do they influence everyday practices?

  • Recruitment decisions may favor people who conform to stereotypes.
  • Promotions and task assignments may be based on unconscious assumptions.
  • Team culture may reward conformity to stereotypical roles.

Becoming aware of prejudices and stereotypes is the first step towards more fair and informed decisions.

Practical conclusion

Being aware of your own mental shortcuts allows you to consciously question your judgments and decisions, as well as create a work environment that does not reproduce prejudices or stereotypes.

It’s not about thinking “without stereotypes” – it’s about recognizing them and controlling their influence.
